What Size TV and Electric Fire Do I Need for My Media Wall?

How to choose the right size of TV and electric fire for your media wall project.

We know from the questions we get asked on social media, by email and on the phone that a key consideration when building a media wall is choosing the size of the appliances.

Customers often ask us which size of electric fire they should get and which should be bigger: the TV or the fireplace?

The truthful answer is that it comes down to personal preference. But there are some pointers we can offer to guide you towards finding your preference.

Knowing your own room

One consideration is the proportions of your room and how they relate to the type of media wall you’re building. For example, if your living room is on the smaller side and you’re opting for a false chimney breast style of media wall (rather than a full width media wall) you will probably want a TV and electric fire that’s at the smaller end of the scale. If the media wall is running across the entire width of the room, a larger fire might be suitable.

Let’s take a look at some possible configurations for your media wall.

Fireplace wider than TV

This is probably the most common configuration, with a built-in electric fire that is wider than the wall-mounted TV. You could have the fire just slightly wider than the TV. Alternatively, you might choose a 3-sided electric fire that runs the full width of the media wall with a narrower TV above.

The wider fireplace creates a homely and cosy environment. It sets the fireplace as a focal point of the room, while the greater height of the TV ensures your favourite shows are not overwhelmed.

Fireplace and TV same width

A second option is to have an electric fireplace and TV that match up at the same width (or as close to the same width as you can get. The easiest way to achieve this look is create a TV recess that’s exactly the same width as your electric fire, then choosing a TV that best fills a recess of that size. Detailing such as LED lighting can be used to add a touch of drama to any slight gap around the TV.

This look creates clean lines, with an equal distance of media wall between each appliance and the edge of the wall. That might be too uniform for some tastes.

TV wider than fireplace

The final option is to have a TV that is wider than your electric fire. This sets your TV up as the undisputed focal point of the wall, creating a home cinema feel to the room.

Some people find this look a bit top-heavy, but it’s another very popular look. Generally, this option works very well with a very large TV.

A word on TV widths

When buying your fireplace online, keep in mind that TVs are measured on the diagonal. So a 70-inch TV is 70 inches when measured corner to corner and not 70 inches wide. The width will be smaller than the TV size (in the case of a 70-inch TV the width will be around 61 inches.

The exact width of a TV varies by model, but as a rule of thumb:

One size does not fit all

As we’ve mentioned it’s about working out the look you want for your home and then lining up the appliances that match. For example, if you like the look of the Ezee Glow 60” Celestial Built-In Media Wall Electric Fire, you could go for a 70-inch TV (which would be around 61 inches wide) if you want them to be roughly the same width. Or you could for a TV that’s much wide or significantly narrower. It’s all down to the personal preference we mentioned at the outset.
